This year we have kindly been sponsored by the Pub Chain JD Wetherspoon. The Tally Ho in Finchley kindly sponsored us for £500 this season and this has enabled us to purchase a brand new Nike kit, which has JD Wetherspoon, The Tally Ho printed on the shirts. We have given one of the shirts to the landlord and it will be framed and put up in the bar area shortly.

We go back to the pub after every away game and have something to eat and plenty to drink!!. We also hold our monthly committee meetings there and will also be having our Christmas party there sometime in December.

Running a football team is very difficult as the financial constraints can be tough, but this sponsorship has really helped us this year and we hope it is a partnership that continues in years to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the area manager and the pub manager for agreeing to support our football club. Its great to see a large company supporting grass roots football.

Old OEFC
1970 - 2001
New OEFC

The Club started in 1970 as Black Horse football Club being the public house in Wood Street. Steve Lawlor run the team and in the early days they played their home games at Clitterhouse Playing Fields in Finchley.

A fairly uneventful first few seasons but then in 1973-1974 they won Division 4 of the Barnet Sunday League. For the next few years they consolidated their position before they won their first bit of silverware in 1980-81 season. This was in the Consolation Trophy final against Malt & Hops which was played in front of a large crowd at Metal Box Sports Ground near Palmers Green. The Black Horse team featured the brothers Taylor and one of them Trevor is still associated with the League today as the assistant referees secretary.

The following season saw a further boom in their fortunes as they won the Division 2 title with the assistance of club legend, Raymond Archer who joined the team towards the end of the campaign on a short term basis from Fiesta Sport and helped get them over the winning line. During the same season a new Reserves side started under the captaincy of Andy Silvey and the team finished in a very respectable mid table position.

In 1985 saw a massive change when the club become part of the Old Elizabethans set up at Gypsy Corner. This move was initiated by Steve Lawlor in conjunction with Eric Shearly from the Old Elizabethans and also Martin Gould who was father of Simon and Jonathon Gould who were players of the Black Horse at that time. This gave them access to some of the best facilities in the borough and as a result their name changed to Old Elizabathans Football Club.

Unfortunately Steve Lawlor left the club the following year and ex teacher of the School, George Cook became chairman.

Success for the new set up was just around the corner and it was the Reserves who started the roll in some style. In season 1988-1989 they won the Division 4 league title and also the League Junior Cup and saw them embark on an unbeaten 2 year run in the Barnet Sunday League. They therefore went on to repeat theirs feats the following season winning the Division 3 title and also the Junior Cup again defeating Prince of Wales Reserves in the final in a penalty shoot out.

Season 1989-1990 was the most successful in the clubs history with the first team winning the Division 1 title and reaching the Premier Division for the first time. Also the newly formed third team were runners up in their first season in Division 4 of the League. Amongst the players for the third team at this time was the irrepressible Richard Weekes who of course subsequently became chairman.

Times were good at Gypsy Corner during this period and there was a fantastic spirit within the club. The club’s dinner and dance was held at the Haven Hotel in St Albans and was a fitting way to end a fabulous season.

Unfortunately success was not maintained and the first team were soon relegated. However they soon bounced back winning the first division again in season 1993/94 after beating Wroxham Park in their final match to win the title.

Season 1994 – 1995 started with an influx of new players to the new club, many of who only remained for a season or two. This enabled the club to run three teams again. The first team under the guidance of club legend Richard Fidler had one of their most successful seasons before tailing off at the end of the season, finishing fifth in the Premier Division. The reserve team struggled for most of the season and the third team playing a friendly league run by the Barnet Sunday League, on top of five divisions, performed admirably again under the player management of current club chairman Richard Weekes. The reserve team led by another legend and ex-league officer Andy Silvey aka The tallest man in the world, were also voted the Division Two Sportsmanship award. The club prides itself on its behaviour both on and off of the pitch over the years.

Season 1995-1996 proved a tough season for the club who owing to the friendly league being disbanded fielded two teams. The first team fielded a number of club legends including Ray Archer, Richard Fidler, Shaun Harris and Barry Phillips. The average age of the team apart from 18 year old Stuart Cheek was about 34 or 35. The team performed admirably throughout the season and the highlight was the fantastic form of Giles Pratt (who had returned to the club after a 4 or 5 year absence) and Alan Wilkinson who scored in excess of 40 goals between them. Despite their best efforts the first team playing in a highly competitive Premier Division finished second bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated. The second team had a season of consolidation mainly owing to the high turnover of players that they had.

Season 1996 – 1997 was the season when a number of the clubs current players joined. Joining the club in the summer was Michael Turner, Lee Turner and Johnny Horner who remain important members of the club both on a playing and off field level. It proved to be a season of consolidation for the club but the influx of committed new players and the ongoing commitment of experienced players such as Ray Archer, John Smith and Barry Phillips provided a good foundation to take the club forward. The reserve team had another season of consolidation but performed well throughout the season and won the Sportsmanship award for all clubs in the Barnet Sunday League, again something, which the club is very proud of.

Season 1997 – 1998 resulted in the first team winning the Spring Cup, which was presented at the League’s annual Presentation Evening by John Motson, the Leagues President. The reserve team had one of their most successful seasons finishing runner up in Barnet Sunday League Division Four and gaining promotion. The reserve team was led superbly throughout the season by Richard Weekes and despite the ever changing personnel produced consistent performances throughout the season. The finished runners up to Potters Bar Rovers who went onto become one of the leagues most successful teams.

Season 1998 – 1999 resulted in the League recognising the clubs performances and owing to a league restructure where promoted back into the Premier Division. This was a tough season for the club but won to which many of the clubs younger players rose to. New players such as Nathan Rodd and Carl Swain along with the older more experienced players under the guidance of Jonathan Smith meant the team was able to preserve its Premier Division status and also claim the scalps of some of the bigger more successful clubs. The reserve team find the step up just a step too far and were relegated despite the best efforts of a hardcore of committed players. This season again saw a high turnover of reserve team players, many of who had difficulty in stepping up to a new standard of football.

Season 1999 – 2000 was another season of consolidation for both teams. The first team fielded some of their youngest ever players, many of whom showed that they would be important players in the future years. This season proved to one of rebuilding for both teams.

Season 2000 – 2001 found the first team competing in the Premier Division and finding themselves, being one of the strongest teams in the league with a good mixture of youth and experience. The season started with real promise, with the club winning the Conyers Park Five a side competition. The team had a large influx of new players brought to the club by Graham Morgan. However owing to clashes between the club committee and Graham Morgan, he left the club midway through the season. Following this performances were inconsistent and a number of players were failing to the show the quite obvious ability that they had. The club fell away badly and a mid table finish was the result.
